I Apologize – I Want to Live

The following post is a waste of time and virtual ink.  Don’t bother to read it.  Even the fact that I bother to write it has a strong odor of anti-Semitism.  After all, why in God’s name does a  country need to justify itself for protecting its own population?  Isn’t it its right to do so?  Isn’t it its obligation?  In the book of human rights, how long should a country absorb rockets and missiles on a daily basis before striking back?  A day?  A Month?  A year?  Two?  Lets try and test this in documented history.

Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982.  On May 21 the British showed up, and on June 14 of that year the war was over.  This was not an attack on mainland United Kingdom.  It was an invasion of a remote colony, which was forcefully ended in a little more than two months.

The US fought in Europe (twice), Korea, Vietnam, Granada, Afghanistan, Iraq and who knows where else, most if not all without direct attack on mainland population, with one obvious exception.

Russia went into a long and bloody war with Chechnya over being a “separatist region”.  There’s no official death toll, but the estimates are anywhere between 25,000 – 50,000 dead.  Mostly civilian.  Last summer Russia went into a devastating offensive in  Georgia over similar issues.  Georgia was crushed, thousands of Ossetians and Geogian die in the heavy fighting.

Examples are numerous.  I can only imagine what would have happened if a couple of missiles would have been shot from Tijuana to San Diego California, or from Nogales to Tucson Arizona.  I doubt that the United States government would have waited eight years (and thousands of missiles) to respond.  Israel should be awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace (which should be taken back from Yasser Arafat) for the practice of patience.

Many people around the globe will undoubtedly support the right of the State of Israel to protect its citizens from rockets, missiles, mortars, and suicide bombers.  For those who support Israel – there’s no need to continue to read this.  We’re on the same page.  On the other hand, for all those who think that Israel must continue to practice patience, and absorb the rockets, missiles and mortars, I have no chance to convince you otherwise, so there’s no need to continue reading either.

I am quite convinced that the patience Israel practiced in the last eight years is unprecedented in the entire human history.  While Hamas was arming, digging tunnels underneath Gaza, smuggling weapons, and shooting them daily at Israeli civilians across the border, Israel had not responded significantly.  Instead, it continued to supply Gazans with gasoline, food and medicine.  Indeed, the voices heard now who demand the ceasing of “all aggressions” in the Middle East, really means for Israel to stop the aggressions, and for the Hamas government to continue.

If you are still reading please hear me out.  We have no beef with the Palestinian people.  We, yes as a collective, respect their right to live respectfully, by our side.  We would love it if there was peace between us.  We would love it if we could have economic ties and tourism.  But please accept the following statement: we will not accept bombs, we will not accept calls for the annihilation of Israel, we will not accept a one sided cease-fire.  And we want Gilad Shalit back.  Alive and well.  Today.

Anti-Semitic comments will not be approved.
